01/20/02 - Liver and Age Spot Treatment

One of the more difficult issues clients seeking facial rejuvenation ask about is reducing or eliminating age spots, also known as liver spots. These are brown spots or patches on the hands, arms, neck or face that are primarily caused by sun damage to the skin. Some people are more susceptible to age spot formation than others, depending on melanin levels in the skin and other genetic factors. Lifestyle factors are also important. Skin discoloration can be caused or exacerbated by an unhealthy liver due to poor food choices, over-use of drugs (legal or otherwise), putrefaction in the colon due to improper food combining, and lack of nutrients.

Like any other “problem area” your clients come to you for, age/liver spots are markers for internal imbalances. People with healthy colons and livers tend to be more resistant to development of age spots.

Physicians often prescribe skin bleaching compounds containing hydroquinone. Hydroquinone requires a doctor’s prescription, and works by reducing melanin production. Its use often produces negative side effects. Skin bleaching can “kill the messenger”, but will do nothing for correcting the internal causes of the age spots.

A good natural topical alternative to hydroquinone are the following natural substances:

Kojic acid

Arbutin

Alpha and beta hydroxyl gels

A company called Skinceuticals makes a good product for age spots called PhytoPlus that contains kojic acid and arbutin.

Microcurrent and color light therapy can be very helpful for improving the health of the skin and the whole body. The ELR (Energy Light Rejuvenation) system can help reduce age spots locally by reducing inflammation of the skin and underlying tissues, improving blood and lymph circulation and bringing more healing Qi energy to the region through stimulation of acupuncture points. ELR also provides systemic balancing effects through meridian connections between the face of internal body organs. Yellow color light has been credited with improving lymphatic circulation. Other colors of light that are individually chosen to balance different skin types can have dramatic effects at normalizing skin coloration.

Microcurrent and color light therapy act as boosters for many kinds of other therapies. We have had positive reports from estheticians about combining it with use of PhytoPlus and many other botanical products, including essential oils. You are encouraged to try to integrate ELR treatment with your favorite skin products and/or exercise, massage or nutritional services. You’ll see how the benefits of each service are enhanced, often quite significantly, by the addition of microcurrent and light therapy.

The internal causes of age spots can be addressed through the following factors:

-Long-term ingestion of chlorophyll will reduce age spots. Good sources – wheatgrass juice or tablets, blue-green algae, spirolina, chlorophyll tablets

-Clean up diet, detox liver, take milk thistle (silymarin) supplements

-Colon and liver cleansing will be very helpful

-Test body for acidosis. If showing, alkalize body through diet, lifestyle fact

Nutritional supplements that can be helpful for reducing age spots include beta-carotene, potassium, selenium, vitamins C and E, bioflavonoids and zinc.
