01/20/06 - Climate Change Drives Diseases Into New Territories

Global warming, which is increasing in this new century, is precipitating the spread of disease epidemics in areas unprepared for the diseases, say many health experts world wide. Warmer climates are allowing greater numbers of ticks, mosquitos, mice and other disease carriers to survive longer and to expand their ranges.

The World Health Organization has identified more than 30 new or resurgent diseases in the last 30 years. Such an explosion of epidemics has not taken place since the Industrial Revolution.

According to Paul Epstein, who currently works on the faculty of the Harvard Medical School, scientist haven’t worried enough about the problem. He stated: “Things we projected to occur in 2080 are happening in 2006. What we didn’t get is how fast and how big it is, and degree to which the biological systems would respond. Our mistake was in underestimation.”

Some of the diseases rapidly spreading due to global warming are West Nile virus, tick-borne encephalitis and malaria.

Please see the landmark movie An Inconvenient Truth, now playing in movie theatres throughout the USA. This movie dramatizes the facts and scientific evidence of the acceleration of this trend. The main point of the movie is to remove reason for denial of the problem, and to encourage us that it is not too late to make necessary changes to slow down global warming and even reverse it – and that these measures do not have to create any setback in our economy. Please see this movie and encourage your network to do so also. Information on what we each can do to help can be found at www.climatecrisis.net.
